What is The Nemours Estate®?
The Nemours Estate®, with its 77-room mansion and over 200 acres of French-inspired formal gardens, grounds and woodlands, is a rare example of 18th century French neoclassical architecture in America. Built for Alfred I. and Jessie Ball duPont in 1909 and opened to the public in 1977, the Estate today hosts 40,000 visitors annually for self-guided tours and family-friendly community events. What is the significance of the Nemours name?
The Nemours Foundation, Estate and children’s healthcare system are named after the French town Mr. duPont’s great-grandfather, Pierre Samuel duPont, represented in the court of Louis XVI.

The duPont Trust is funded by an approximately $9 billion endowment, from the estate of Alfred I. duPont, which is managed by a full-time investment team.

The Trust’s activities are overseen by five appointed Trustees and a full-time investment team. We are loyal stewards of Mr. duPont’s will, maintaining his estate in perpetuity and executing his vision of healthier lives for children around the world. We are guided by an unwavering set of values in our efforts to honor and deliver on Mr. duPont’s legacy.
How is the Trust invested?
Given our perpetual nature, the Trust pursues a diversified investment strategy with long-term perspective and partnerships. Holdings include a balance of equities, bonds and alternative investments, with preservation of capital and growth as priorities, so we can continue to assist Nemours Children’s Health in becoming the national leader in pediatric outcomes.

Alfred I. duPont was an industrialist, scientist, musician, inventor and leading turn-of-the-century philanthropist with a legacy of service. His last will and testament established the Alfred I. duPont Charitable Trust in 1935, which provided for the formation of The Nemours Foundation. In the decades since, Mr. duPont’s vision and compassion have improved the health and lives of hundreds of thousands of children.
